Somercotes' A look into the past
by Printscene on Monday 3 August 2009

Here are a few photos of how Somercotes used to look. Like today Nottingham Road was home to many of the shops. If you look at the photo to the right you will notice that there wasn't a car in sight. Today if you were stood in the location the picture was taken from you would probably get run over by a car leaving the car park next to the CO-OP, how things change. The photo in the top right is a view looking up Somercotes Hill with the photo below it showing the top end of Nottingham Road. The Local Public House is shown below, the Three Horse Shoes. Notice the small out building to the left of the pub have now long gone to be replaced by the outdoor smoking area. The Alfreton Poor House, Sleetmoor Lane Somercotes At a special meeting held at the George Inn Alfreton at the end of the 17th century and at the beginning of the 18th century, the overseers ordered that a poor house be built to house the poor and legally settled people of the Parish with the vision of improving the life style of the down and outs. Built on Sleetmoor Common (now the site of the A.D.A.S.C football pitches), the building was later sold into private hands becoming cottages and a Public House, the "Laburnam Inn". Trade at the pub was very seasonal and was a popular meeting place for people from surrounding areas. Thanks to Paul Nicholls from the Alfreton Heritage Centre for supplying the photos and information.
