November 15th

After the publication of the Armistice the inhabitants of Somercotes displayed garlands and decorated their windows with flags.  It was a sight we had not seen for the last 4 years.  The gloom from the inhabitant’s faces had disappeared and everybody at once was in a holiday mood.

A Chrysanthemum Show which was in aid of the Somercotes Nursing Association raised the sum of £3.

Police Permits must be obtained for Firework Displays whether in back gardens or Public places.

November 15th

The restrictions for Ringing of Bells, Striking Public Clocks, Masking of Street Lamps, Serving Hot Meals after 9.30pm and Closing Places of Entertainment are withdrawn.  Lights on vehicles however are to continue for the present.  Thank goodness the local company have lost no time in removing the Half Mourning from the street lamps.  The darkness has been one of the horrors of the war.

Lieut STANLEY A ROGERS (Sherwood Foresters) s/o MR & MRS JAMES ROGERS of Somercotes, reported missing last April and prisoner of war in July is now reported killed.

November 22nd

The weekly ration of Butchers meat will be doubled for the week before Christmas.  From December 16th to January 14th, Turkeys, Geese, Ducks, Chickens, Fowls and Game will be sold coupon free.

Sgt W VARLEY returned home to his parents MR & MRS T VARLEY, Charles Street Leabrooks on Monday after being a POW for over 4 years.  He belonged to the Grenadier Guards and was on of the ‘Contemptibles’.

Somercotes still keeps losing its inhabitants through the outbreak of Influenza.  News has reached us of the deaths of Mrs DOOLEY wife of SAMUEL.  Mrs TOWNSEND wife of JOSEPH, Mrs GIBSON and Mrs MILLS.

At Alfreton Police Court on Wednesday GEORGE DEXTER Landlord of the Rifle Volunteer Inn was fined a total of £3.8s.6d for permitting a soldier THOMAS PATRICK to take liquor from his premises during prohibited hours.

AB L DUFFING BL Drake Battalion RND s/o MR & MRS JOHN DUFFING of Cinder Rd has distinguished himself throughout the War since he joined up on June 22nd 1916.

December 6th

Local Corps of the Salvation Army promoted a successful Benefit Concert on Wednesday evening in the Girls School for the joint benefit of Mr G G WHEATLEY and Mrs JENKINSON.

The Electric Theatre was kindly lent by Mrs BEASTALL on Sunday Evening to the Local Prisoners of War Fund Committee for a concert to raise funds to send parcels to the Soldiers and Sailors.  There was a large audience and those taking part were – Miss CONWAY JOWETT, Miss B CLAYTON, MISS L PARKIN, Miss M COOKE,  Mr W H WAGER, Mr A SLATER, Mr H COOKE  and the Leabrooks Orchestra.  The splendid sum of £26.7s.6d was realised.

December 13th

On Tuesday a Wedding of local interest took place at Birchwood Methodist Church.  The Bride Miss ELIZA WILLIAMS d/o Mr & Mrs G H WILLILAMS of Somercotes and Mr WILLIAM NAYLOR 4th s/o Mr & Mrs THOMAS NAYLOR of Birchwood.

Milk can now only be obtained as a separate beverage in residential and catering establishments and milk shops and for children under 10 and invalids on a Medical Certificate.

December 22nd

Miners meeting at the Sun Inn paid the sum of £2400 to Miners at Birchwood Colliery for War Relief.

December 27th

On and after January 27th the weekly Sugar Ration is to be increased from 8 to 12ozs per head.
