1940 February 2nd

Mr WALTER COOOPER  of Quarry Road who died June 29th 1939  left property to the value of £2,402 18s 8d.  He gave £100 to Birchwood Methodist Church.

1940 April 5th

Fire broke out on the roof of Leabrooks  Miners Welfare  on Monday night.  The Butterley Company Fire Brigade with 16 Somercotes A.F.S  were quickly on the scene and inside an hour had the fire under control.  One auxiliary fireman was DENIS SMITH the Derbyshire cricketer.

1940 June 14th

Rev CHARLES GORDON FROGGET former Rector of Ilmington Warwickshire was inducted Vicar of Somercotes.

1940 July 12th

Mr CLIFFORD NAYLOR of Quarry Road passed 1st class and 2nd clazss in Building Construction at the evening lectures at Nottingham University.

1940 July 19th

The Rev RICHARD ERNEST BIRTWISTLE M.A of Holmfield Road St Annes on Sea,  Lancashire,  formerly Vicar of Somercotes,  left £1550.

1940 July 26th

Somercotes Red Cross dispatched to Bakewell a parcel containing 9 Pullovers, 7 Scarves, 1pr Bedsocks, 1pr Operation hose, 14prs Mittens (12prs given by a Sth African Lady) 73 prs socks.  This brings the total number of garments to 1000.  £3.6s.5d was handed over by Mrs PITCHFORD & Mrs WARD as a result of a Whist Drive.

1944 January 14th

The Somercotes Communist Party held a one day school at Leabrooks on Sunday.  Mr JACK ELEY of Nottingham gave 2 lectures on ‘Economics of Capitalisation’.

1946 February 1st

The menfolk of St Thomas Social Club entertained the Ladies to a SUPPER & SOCIAL on Friday evening.  A splendid meal prepared and served by the men.   Messrs R SMITH, E GOODALL, W WYLIE, H SHARPE & EWART BETTISON presented a programme of enjoyable items.   

1946 April 26th

JOSEPH WILLIAM BUTLER eldest son of Mr & Mrs GEO BUTLER of Woodside Farm Ripley married MARGARET STORER 2nd daughter of Mr & Mrs J H STORER of Birchwood Lane.  Given away by her father  the bride work an ankle length dress of Ice Blue Satin with a Blue Veil.  Her bouquet was of Red carnations and trailing fern.
