Photos of Somercotes Past
by Parish Council on Wednesday 23 May 2012

The Parish Council have been given a few photos of Somercotes in bygone years.

Thanks to Rachel Watson for this photograph which is approximately 80 years old!
Rachel’s Uncle, Noel Bryan, is pictured in the photograph and is second from the left on the middle row.

Pictured is Rachel Watson (nee Bryan) dressed as Britannia for a procession around the streets of Somercotes on Coronation Day, June 1953.

Does anyone else have photographs of the procession?  If so, could you please share them with us?

SILVER JUBILEE CARNIVAL QUEEN

Mrs Sybil Armstrong has kindly lent us the newspaper clipping showing Diane Stewart being crowned Carnival Queen for the Silver Jubilee Carnival in 1977.  Her attendants were Linda Martin, Helen Maskery and Sybil’s daughter, Elaine Armstrong.

THE QUEEN’S GOLDEN JUBILEE

Sybil has also lent us this newspaper clipping of the flower display she provided at St. Thomas Church at a fundraising day to mark the Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002.  With Sybil in the photograph is Granville Stone, who was Churchwarden.  The news article was entitled  ‘Flower Power for the Jubilee’, and stated that “the church was bedecked with beautiful flower arrangements using the Jubilee as a theme”.  £238 was raised from the monthly coffee and cakes morning, a quiz raised £92, and a strawberries and cream tea event raised a further £53.  A concert was held on the same day and music was provided by Riddings Brass Band.
