Katies fundraising for Melanoma Research continues
by Parish Council on Sunday 2 August 2009

Katie Taylor, daughter of Wayne & Alison Taylor and sister of Chris, of Albert Street, Leabrooks, passed away on 17th June, 2008, aged 15. Katie was an active, outgoing, bubbly young lady with a wide circle of friends, who enjoyed horse riding, training her dogs, shopping with her firends and being a normal teenager. When Katie found a mole on her leg had started itching she merely mentioned it in passing to her mum as she had scratched it so badly in her sleep she had scratched the top off. Katie's mum took her to see their doctor and she was immediately referred to the Dermatology Department at Derby Children's Hospital. Two weeks later a diagnosis of Malignant Melanoma, the most serious and deadly form of skin cancer was returned. Before her death Katie planned a sponsored walk to raise funds for research and development of awareness and a cure for this form of cancer. It was intended that Katie would go on the walk in a wheelchair, which began at midnight on 21st June, 2008, walking from darkness into light, from the unknown quantity of Melanoma to the enlightened knowledge of research to find a cure for others. Sadly, Katie died a few days before the walk took place. A great deal of money was raised from the walk and, despite their grief, Katie's parents have continued to fundraise ever since, with the help of friends, with events such as a quiz, a rock concert, a sponsored bungee jump, and a further Katie's Midnight Walk this year on 20th June.It is hoped that the Wine & Wisdom Night on 19th September will be as successful as last year's quiz, which was enjoyed by all concerned. On Monday, 24th August, 2009, at 7.30 pm at the Somercotes Parish Hall, Professor Poulam Patel and colleagues will be giving a presentation of the research which has been carried out, funded by Katie's Midnight Walk (contact Pauline 607549 for more information).
